This pattern is highly adaptable and is more about measurement than about gauge or stitches
  • Chainless HDC is used for the foundation chain and also counts as the first row
  • Worsted weight yarn & 5.5mm hook was used but, you may adjust to your liking
  • I used just under 3 entire skeins of Bernat Super value 7oz
  • It helps to measure for hip pocket to pocket over the shoulder

Is this shawl made lengthwise or from side to side? I heartily dislike working on any project that needs a starting foundation chain of more than 12 inches ! I love the V stitch but not if I have do the equivalent of more than 50-75 chains!

Hello Peggy,

This shawl pattern is made length-wise. It does call for a longer chain. I use stitch markers and place one every 20th chain stitch. This helps so I don't have to go back and do so much counting.

could you make a suggestion to me how many starting chains approximately for a lady who is about 5 feet 5 and 165 lbs. I am making this for my nanny who is in a care home so I can't measure her.

Hello Valerie,

I chained about 210 which was equal to about 60 inches for me. I used the wingspan/height measurement to crochet up to 60 inches. This is subject to change per tension/yarn/hook used.

LOVE this pattern!! So easy to work with and adjust for length, and it appears it will hold it's shape better than some I've used. Thank you for a great free pattern!

I don’t know how to do a chain less row. I will look into learning. Would I be able to do a chain and then start Row one.

Hello Linds-Marie. You can do a chain row first and then HDC across. I just recommend that you chain loosely.

When working on the V-stitch sections, is the chain 2 at the beginning of each row counted as a stitch? So that I when I skip 2 stitches to start the V-stitch I am going into the 3rd stitch from the beginning of the row?

Yes you would ch 2 & then do your first V stitch in the 3rd stitch from the hook.

Hi, Just want to be clear - if I chain / HDC instead of the foundation row HDC then my chain count would be a multiple of 3+1 right, and the 1 is to account for the turning chain on the first row? Thanks

How wide is the shawl? I'm only 5'2 so I know 42 rows are too many. I have done about 20 rows so far and it is about 12 inches wide.

Hi, I am making one, but have no idea how wide it should be. I am ok with the length (cast on) just not how long to keep crocheting!

Just finished the shawl in a silver gray color. This was a very easy patern that works up quickly. The end result was a beautiful shawl you would keep for yourself or as a gift. The only change I made was not doing the fringe I added a shell border on the ends. Thank you for a be a pattern.
